Homemade Dog food Recipe – Vegan/Plant-based

Many people have requested I show how I make my vegan dog food, so here it is.
*I like to use as much organic as possible*
-2-3 SWEET POTATOES
-2 CUPS OATS (I get gluten free)
-2 CUPS SHORT GRAIN BROWN RICE
-1 LARGE CAN OF BLACK BEANS (25 oz) RINSED (and/or 2 cups lentils)
-1 CAN OF PUMPKIN
-1 PACKAGE OF SILKEN TOFU
-1/3 CUP HEMP OIL
-AROUND 3/4 CUP- 1 CUP GROUND FLAX SEEDS (make sure they are ground, not whole, or your dog will not digest it)
-1 CUP NUTRITIONAL YEAST (make sure you get one that has vitamin b12)
-ABOUT 3 TBSP MOLASSES
-ABOUT 1/2 CUP OF UNSALTED CREAMY PEANUT BUTTER
-1 FROZEN BAG OF PEAS AND CARROTS
-1-2 CUPS OF BROCCOLI, KALE, SPINACH, ETC. (if your dogs don’t like to snack on raw broccoli, I suggest putting a mixture of broccoli and kale in the food, or mixing it up each week).
-UNSWEETENED/UNFLAVORED NON-DAIRY MILK FOR MIXING Or you can use the starchy hot water from the sweet potatoes to help thin the dog food.
*I wanted to include the health benefits in this section, but I ran out of room. To see more of what I wrote, click here- https://www.facebook.com/notes/the-veggie-nut/homemade-vegan-dog-food/1036149489733358

This batch lasts 5-6 days. You can feed them as much food as you normally would or a little more, along with healthy snacks during the day. Making a homemade dog food can be trial and error at first. You will most likely have to play around with the consistency, until you find out how your dogs like it best, my dogs don’t like it too thick.

Other foods you can add to your dog food- you can mix it up and add different kinds of whole grains and quinoa. You can use different kinds of potatoes, different healthy oils and ground seeds. You can add different types of beans (but black beans are super healthy for dogs). I will add lentils in the dog food every other batch, but also give them some lentils for a snack, when I make some for myself. You can try different veggies, if you know your dog likes a certain type of veggie best, throw it in there, green beans are a good option, but I give them to my dog as a snack. You can also add canned sweet potato or squash. About once a month I mix it up and add an unsweetened apple sauce to their food.

Whole foods I give my dogs as snacks-
Broccoli, green beans, beans (especially black beans), diced up tofu and tempeh, apples, carrots, zucchini, cucumbers, cooked sweet potato or squash pieces, bell peppers, unsalted pretzels, bananas, and my one dog, Fufi, actually loves Kale (but most dogs won’t).
*Don’t let your dogs have the seeds of fruits.

Keep your dogs away from these foods- grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, avocado, macadamia nuts, mushrooms, nutmeg, salt, rhubarb leaves, tomatoes/tomato plants, the seeds of fruit (like apples, peaches, pears, plums, apricots, cherries), corn cob, bones, raw salmon, raw eggs, dairy, fatty unhealthy grossness (like bacon, hot dogs, sausages, turkey skin, deep fried foods) and need I say it- chocolate, alcohol, caffeine.

Are dogs carnivores? Do they need meat? Can dogs be healthy eating a vegan plant-based diet?

*Always do your research, consult your vet and keep up on blood work. My dogs vitamin levels are perfect just by feeding them plant food, some dogs may need a supplement though. Research taurine and carnitine to see if it’s right for your dog and check out VegeDog http://www.veggiepets.com/shop/vegedog-supplement.html.
Just like humans should get a physical and their blood checked at least once a year, so should dogs (I get theirs checked 2-3 times a year) . Never be negligent.
